I met the French policy analyst Olivier Guillard in 2013 during one of my many visits to Myanmar in the 2005-2019 period. He was referred to me by a mutual friend at the Brookings Institution.

When travel resumed after the Covid-19 pandemic and I started making annual visits to my ancestral home in Normandy, I began meeting Olivier over coffee or lunch in Paris to update him on my view of the mess in Myanmar. After our meeting this past June, he invited me to participate in an interview about Myanmar for a newsletter published by his research institute. The format is a set of questions answered by a subject matter expert. The newsletter is published in French for its main audience but is now published in an English edition as well.

In my meetings with Olivier, we always discuss a broad range of topics. A few weeks ago, he asked me to participate in an interview about another of my favorite topics: China’s population. Here is the result in English.
